A fresh perspective

Last month, Boating Industry hired a new full-time associate editor, Brent Renneke. He’s been on board for less than three weeks, but he’s already hard at work, interviewing dealers and manufacturers for articles to be published in the coming months, writing for our daily e-newsletter, editing our latest magazine issue and calling Top 100 Dealers about the upcoming application deadline. Grow Boating: What would you do?

In the April issue of Boating Industry magazine, I wrote a column sharing my thoughts about the Grow Boating Initiative. In the past few months, I’ve heard from a handful of industry executives who are concerned about certain aspects of the program. Read more >>

The Top 100 gets naked

About a month ago, I read a book called, “Getting Naked: A business fable.” The book is about how being vulnerable in business actually leads to stronger relationships with those we serve – and helps us serve them better. Read more >>

Talking to prospects about SeeDealerCost.com

More of the same?

Yesterday, I happened on a thoughtful column on retail trends written by West Marine Executive Vice President Bruce Edwards for Sail America’s newsletter, Waypoints. A good reason to be wrong

Today, I picked a copy of Boating Industry’s June issue off my shelf. On the cover was a question: Is this a recovery? And in the cover story, I wrote of the signals we were receiving from many of the 12 dealers we interviewed that suggested market conditions were improving in many geographic pockets throughout North America. I was hopeful that we would see evidence of a recovery this year. Read more >>

More than just surviving

As we finish up the Top 100 Dealer evaluation process this week, I find myself inspired. 2009 was one of the worst years on record for our industry, and yet the leaders within the marine dealer body managed to do so much more than survive last year. In reviewing the applications, we found the  majority were not only profitable, but they also made big leaps forward in improving their businesses. Read more >>

Efficiency: Not just for the service department

One of my biggest challenges in life is finding a sense of balance between the different roles I play. It seems like most of us are wearing multiple hats at work these days as part of our companies’ efforts to remain profitable in this economy. And then there are our other roles: parents, spouses, caretakers for our family’s elders, coaches for our kids’ sports teams, home owners, cooks, weekend warriors, etc. Read more >>

First day back

Yesterday I felt a little like a kid getting on the bus for the first time after a long summer vacation. I’ve been on maternity leave for the past few months, so this is my first week in the office since June. Read more >>
